Rain Fu
How might we turn plant care into an emotionally supportive and engaging experience for young generations?
This question emerged from listening to discouraged plant lovers—those who tried, failed, and felt alone in that experience. As a designer, Rain Fu is drawn to the quiet emotional struggles in everyday life. Buddi was created to offer young people encouragement, humor, and joy in their plant journey—even when things don't go as planned.
Buddi is a system that transforms plant care into a playful and emotionally supportive experience for young generations. Designed for first-time or discouraged plant owners—people who want to enjoy gardening–Buddi supports those overwhelmed by disappointment, frustration, or a lack of feedback in their plant care.
The Buddi system consists of a mobile app, a physical memory kit, and a public event.
The Buddi App is the heart of the project. Its core feature is the Plant Tracking system, where users can engage with their plants through expressive, AI-generated characters. Living plants are kept in the "Front Yard," while deceased ones become charming ghosts resting in the "Back Yard." Users can visit friends' gardens, give likes, or leave flowers, transforming plant loss into something shared, humorous, and lighthearted. Other features include personal growth tracking, a care calendar, community groups, and a Swap Shop that rewards generosity.
The Plant Memory Kit allows users to reflect on their plant care journey through creative expression. It includes a photo album, decorative tapes, and stickers to personify each plant, helping users turn small memories into comforting rituals.
Finally, the Plant Funeral Event invites participants to say goodbye to their plants in a playful group setting. It uses storytelling and hands-on activities to turn difficult moments into shared laughter and connection.
Buddi doesn't promise perfect plant care—it offers emotional encouragement and a reason to try again.
