Solmate
Your perfect match for clean energy
Het Nagda
Can we make participating in climate action feel easy, empowering, and even cool—for people who are usually left out?
Driven to make climate action more approachable, designer Het Nagda set out to reimagine how accessible renewable energy can be in everyday life—especially for renters. Instead of leading with fear or guilt, he uses interaction design to transform a complex, invisible system into something renters can understand, connect with, and take action on.
The Solmate experience was shaped through testing and co-creation sessions with real renters — uncovering needs, validating flows, and building trust.
Many urban renters want to support clean energy—but most feel stuck. Rooftop solar isn’t an option if you don’t own your home, and green energy programs can be confusing, expensive, or difficult to trust. Even though solutions like Community Solar exist, few people know about them, and those who do often find them too complex to act on.
Solmate is designed to close this gap. Through physical and digital interactions, it reimagines how renters engage with renewable energy by making it simple, visible, and community-driven.
Solmate is an ecosystem of three interconnected solutions:
The Solar Flow Experience – A hands-on physical installation that helps people understand how electricity flows from various sources into the power grid and how community solar allows renters to participate in clean energy. Through light and motion, it breaks down an invisible system in a tangible way.
Solmate App – A renter-first energy platform that matches users with local solar farms, lets them subscribe in minutes, and tracks their savings and impact in real-time. No installations, no utility switching—just clean energy made easy.
Solmate Welcome Kit – A care package designed to help new subscribers feel connected to the clean energy they’re helping generate through a portable solar charger for home use, a sticker set, and a solar badge/token—bringing a sense of joy and ownership to an otherwise invisible system.
Solmate empowers renters to take climate action—on their terms.
